For many, Easter means quality time with family and friends, nice cross-country skiing trips, just being outside enjoying the sun, late evenings in front of the bonfire and long days on the ski slope followed by après ski! Easter in the mountains is one of the best things you can experience, the snow conditions is still very good, the sun is warm and there are lots of people who enjoy skiing. For the family, the days are filled with fun outdoor activities and the evenings are spent inside around the dining table with good food and board games. This is Norwegian Easter at its best!

Easter holiday in Geilo - How to plan

How to get here - Geilo is located on the mountain midway between Oslo and Bergen. From Oslo it is approx. 220 km and from Bergen approx. 244 km by car. The easiest and fastest way to get to Geilo is to take a train, the train runs directly from both Oslo and Bergen stations.

Accommodation - Stay at one of the hotels with a central location in relation to the center and the ski resort. Hotels such as Vestlia Resort, Geilo Hotel, Ustedalen Resort and Dr. Holms Hotel all have a good location and can offer, among other things, a swimming pool and sauna, ski-in ski-out, restaurant and bar. Do you want to gather the extended family and live together in a cabin or in an apartment? Then we have several self-catering properties that are just perfect.

Ski pass - Pre-order your ski pass and collect it easily from one of the several drop boxes near the accommodation or in the ski resort.

Ski bus - Whether you come to Geilo by train or car, the ski bus will take you around Geilo. Both to and from the ski centre, as well as to and from the center when you go shopping. Choose a green and stress-free option this Easter, take the bus for free!

Cross-country skiing -  No Easter is complete without a cross-country trip. There are miles of cross-country skiing tracks in Geilo, and we recommend that the whole family go for a short trip on cross-country skiing with a stop at one of the food service cabins in the mountain.

Winter activity - Treat yourself to an outdoor activity that brings the family together and gives you a memory to last a lifetime! Pre-book an outdoor activity suitable for both young and old, how about ice bathing and sauna, dog sledding or a guided snowshoe trip?

Book a table - Regardless of where you want to live, it is extra nice to be able to go to a restaurant one of the evenings to enjoy a good dinner. We recommend booking in advance if you have a wish for a spesific restaurant or time.

Shopping - The center of Geilo consists of a nice pedestrian street, with many shops and cafes. Take a break from skiing, explore the center of Geilo and all it has to offer!

A typical norwegian Easter celebration for the family

Day 1

The first day, a lot goes into planning and shopping. Therefore, you start the day in the center of Geilo and do all your errands, before you take a coffee break and lunch at Perleporten Cafè & Bar. After lunch, you go to a few more shops, before heading back to the accommodation. In the afternoon, you have pre-booked an outdoor activity for the whole family. The duration depends on what you have ordered, but anything from 1-2 hours must be expected. After a long day outdoors with shopping and activities, it's good to know that the rest of the evening will be spent at the hotel or cabin, with a delicious dinner, good drinks and a round of board games!

Day 2

The weather forecast reports bright sun and no wind. This is the perfect day for a cross-country trip in the high mountains! If you have small children, we recommend to try  Kikut to Hakkesetstølen, if you have slightly older children who do a lot of cross-country skiing, we recommend that you take Kikut to Ruperanden or Havsdalen through Budalen to Vestreim. You pack your bag with what is extremely important on an Easter trip, chocolate, oranges and enough drink. Remember to bring warm clothes and sunscreen! Both Hakkesetstølen, Ruperanden and Vestreim are food service cabins in the mountians which stays open all Easter, they serve freshly baked buns, light meals, drinks and snacks. A short break in the sun with a fresh waffle is something everyone deserves!

Day 3

The day starts with a long, delicious breakfast before you change into your ski clothes and get your skis. Depending on where you live, you can either walk out the door and straight to the ski resort or jump on the ski bus which takes you directly to the ski lift. You start by skiing for a few hours before you take your lunch break at Vestlia Ski Café, the smell of freshly fried hamburgers has followed you since you sat in the lift for the first time. The outdoor eating area is packed with happy children running around, the chefs are grilling hamburgers and the waiters are serving thirsty people. After a well-deserved lunch in the sun, you ski a bit longer before the whole gang is completely exhausted. A few hours on the sofa works wonders. The rest of the evening is spent in a restaurant, the little ones have been allowed to decide on dinner and the choice was pizza at Highland Pizzeria.

Day 4

The big day has finally arrived! Breakfast is simple and short, the sun is shining outside and you are more than ready to get outside. You each find your own shovel and start digging, some make seating areas, while others prepare a ski slope and jumps nearby. An Easter ski race will be organized today, and for the little ones there will be an Easter egg hunt. The seating area is filled with soft drinks, goodies and sliced ​​fruit. You start the bon fire, and today's lunch will be grilled sausages. The whole extended family gathers, and maybe the neighbor will vjoin too. Both young and old enjoy the day out, there are games, fun, competitions and lots of laughter. The evening is rounded off inside with a traditional Easter dinner. The Easter radio is on in the background and the Easter quiz is ready on the living room table. You enjøy tha last evening to the fullest!
